In “Lessons from my first Crochet Booties“, I mentioned that I would be trying what looked to be simple crossover crochet booties – a free pattern by Louise Mac, found at Ravelry.
Well, I did try it and it is not quite suitable for an adult pair of crochet booties. Not without adjustments at any rate.
Here are the results and lessons learnt from trying out the crossover bootes for an adult ..
Experimental adult Crossover Crochet Booties
Remember that this is my experimental bootie – so please no hissing and booing at my color choices. Ignoring the colors, the crossover crochet booties look pretty okay. But it really is not …
Not only does it feel way too loose, but as soon as you flex your foot, you can see just how loose it really is.
So the crossover booties may work on some cute baby footsie, but surely not on my adult sized ones!
Lessons from Crossover Crochet Booties
So what can one do? Here are some experimental results that kind of work if you are really keen on making crossover crochet booties for adults.
Crochet a row of edging to tighten the edges. That kind of works and is not too bad.
And once the firming-edging is in place, folding over the edges will give an even firmer fit.
Hoever, overall, I did not like this pattern for use in an adult-sized crochet booties. The sides of the bootie, especially around the ankles are kind of puffy-loose. Not snug. A few more modifications and tweaks might work; but not as is.
What I did get out of this experimental phase is that I was also experimenting on producing thicker soles. Though I was quite pleased with my ridged soles in my first crochet bootie, I wanted soles that were even thicker and more substantial feeling.
This is how I came to trying out the Astrakhan Crochet Stitch. It is puffy stitch and easy to crochet. As you can see, it is quite puffy and provides good cushioning. Not to mention great for cleaning floors! 😀
Later, I used this same crochet stitch in my next bootie – and made it even better by having double-layered soles: Crochet Booties for Cleaning Floors.
I also used this double-layered Astrakhan Stitch when I made a warm, floor-cleaning bootie for my partner. Afterall, housework can also be performed equally well by males!

I just wanted to say I like your crafts and your attitude. I was looking for a crochet pattern for the cross over slipper with the flip flop shoe bottom. I have my strips crocheted but I am not sure how to get started with attaching to the flip flop sole. I guess I will experiment like you do. I think you are awesome. Thanks for sharing all the cool stuff you do. It inspires me to be more adventurous with my crafty stuff. 🙂

Hi Patti, if you got a smidgen of inspiration from the little I do, then I am over joyed .. and feel as if I am paying a little back to the many on the net who inspire me with their amazing creativity all the time. I do apologize for my late responses. Health stuff. Continue your craftiness! 😀
BTW, have you tried looking on YouTube for how to attach to flip flop soles? I am sure they have some brill ideas. I have seen some before. Good luck!
